Description
A falouka (also spelled felucca) is a traditional wooden sailboat commonly used along the Nile River in Egypt and parts of the eastern Mediterranean. These boats have been in use for thousands of years and are known for their graceful design and simplicity. Typically featuring one or two lateen sails (triangular sails mounted at an angle), faloukas are wind-powered and move quietly over the water, offering a peaceful, nostalgic sailing experience.
Faloukas are usually used for leisure cruises, especially in places like Cairo, Aswan, and Luxor, where tourists and locals alike enjoy scenic trips during sunset or under the stars. The boat's structure is relatively small and open, with cushioned seating and sometimes a canopy for shade, making it perfect for short group rides or romantic outings. They are often decorated with colorful fabrics, lights, or local ornaments, adding to their charm and cultural appeal.
