Description

The House of Zeinab Khatoun is a beautifully preserved historic mansion located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, near Al-Azhar Mosque. Built in 1468 during the Mamluk era and later expanded in the 18th century, it showcases classic Islamic architecture with elegant wooden mashrabiyas (latticed windows), intricate stone carvings, and a central open courtyard surrounded by separate quarters for men and women.

Named after Zeinab Khatoun, a woman of noble status who once lived there, the house holds a rich legacy. She was known for her compassion and courage, especially during the French occupation of Egypt, when she provided shelter to wounded fighters resisting the invasion.

Over the centuries, the house has served multiple purposes—from private residence to cultural refuge—and today it functions as a cultural center, hosting art exhibitions, concerts, and public events. Its blend of historical charm and artistic life makes it a treasured gem in Cairo’s historic district.
